Edward Riley Bradley
December 12, 1859 - August 15, 1946
"The Greatest Gambler of All Time"
At the age of 14 this Irish lad quit the steel mills of Pennsylvania
and set out for Texas where he worked on cattle ranches and prospected for gold
in Arizona and Mexico. He was a U.S. government scout in the campaign against
the Apache Indians, which ended with the capture of Chief Geronimo in 1886.
Those years in the Southwest - when nearly everyone played poker and faro and
bet on Indian pony races - even E.R. Bradley himself appeared as a bookmaker and
was known to take a bet on anything.
