As home to the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) corporate headquarters and a number of golf-course residential communities, Palm Beach Gardens enjoys a reputation as a golfer's mecca. Each year, thousands of visitors come to the PGA National Resort Spa in Palm Beach Gardens to watch the world's top golfers compete in the PGA Seniors Championship. But golf isn't the city's only attraction. Its meandering waterways with deep-water access are a boater's nirvana, while its many parks and greenbelts provide countless outdoor activities for families. In fact, Palm Beach Garden's parks and recreation program has been awarded a gold medal for excellence by the National Parks and Recreation Association. What's more, the city has a nationally accredited police department and has been recognized as a leader in the Federal Clean Air Act alternative fuel vehicle program for utilizing natural-gas technology in its municipal fleet. Though it is the county's second-largest city in terms of area and fifth-largest based on number of residents, Palm Beach Gardens maintains a "small town" flavor. The emphasis here is on open spaces, tree-lined streets, bike paths and jogging trails, and a wealth of family-oriented sports and recreation activities. There are plenty of professional opportunities and services as well: The city is home to a large business, professional and healthcare community, including Abe Gosman's Medical Mall and the international headquarters of Wackenhut Corporation. The Gardens-based Eissey Campus of Palm Beach Community College is the center for higher education on the county's north end, while its newly opened Eissey Campus Theatre brings a new dimension to the local arts scene with quality cultural events and arts exhibits. Palm Beach Gardens is a relatively young city (it was founded in 1959 by the late John D. MacArthur) with a population of 35,000 residents, most of whom are young professionals and families that live here year 'round. By Daphne Nikolopoulos.
