Morton’s of Chicago
Is it quintissentially steak and potatoes? Yes. Is it expensive ? Very. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
Morton’s of Chicago is a beloved restaurant which well deserves its
reputation for perfect steaks. Beef selections include filet mignon, sirloin,
porterhouse and ribeye and each one is worthy of the highest commendation.
Steaks are large, juicy and perfectly cooked. Other excellent entrees are
chops and seafood, including mammoth-sized Maine lobsters weighing in at
over 3 pounds. Vegetables are fresh and served steamed. Everything is a
la carte, and dinner for two can easily cost over $150 and that is without
a fancy bottle of wine the selection of which is extensive. Standard sauces
such as Bearnaise and Hollandaise are served a cote and are respectable,
but, the point of Morton’s is food so fresh it can withstand strict scrutiny
by a discriminating palat without any embellishment at all. If your appetite
extends to dessert, choices include cheesecake, creme caramel and souffles
which are the house specialty. The atmosphere is moneyed and masculine,
mahogany throughout. The bar is one of the nicest in town: dark, intimate
and elegantly appointed. The staff is efficient, friendly and upbeat. If
you go, Morton’s is guaranteed to become one of your favorite local steakhouses.
Reservations are highly recommended.
