Below are some favorites to acquaint you with the area’s hundreds of accommodations — from restored, historic castle-size properties to the contemporary luxury hotels and popular chains. They are listed by geographic area for your convenience. We welcome your comments and hope to include your own suggestions about places to stay in future editions of The Insiders’ Guide® to Boca Raton & The Palm Beaches.
Assume the most expensive rates will be between November and March, but it's best to inquire individually as to when each hotel adjusts its seasonal rates. Many, for instance, raise rates November 1 and again the week of Christmas.
Note: Each entry in this chapter has a dollar code intended to serve as a general price guide. The designation is based on the average cost of one night’s lodging for two people (double occupancy) during the winter (peak) season.
Price-code Key
$50 and less $
$51 to $100 $$
$101 to $150 $$$
$151 and more $$$$
Unless otherwise noted, all accommodations accept at least MasterCard and Visa. Inquire when you make your reservation about which credit cards are accepted. Also, in the case of long-term stays, find out in advance what the accommodation’s policies are regarding cancellations.

Boca Raton Resort and Club
501 E. Camino Real • 395-3000 •
$$$-$$$$ • (800) 327-0101
The term “hotel” in Boca Raton refers to Her, the one and only. The city has many fine establishments, marvelous places to stay, but the Hotel is the only incarnation of history, romance, legend and real life — with clean sheets that whisper and friendly ghosts who hum.
Our doyenne, and the inspiration for illustrator Thomas B. Allen’s 1987 limited-edition pastel “The Lady of Boca,” she is a patron saint who knows how to cook.
Born in the imagination of Addison Mizner and making her debut on February 26, 1926, the 100-room Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn became an expanded private club in 1930, and a luxury hotel again in 1944. “The Boca” has hosted the rich, famous and well-connected, as you’ll see in our History chapter. A milestone in its elaborate past, current owners renamed her the Boca Raton Resort and Club in the mid-1980s.
Configured around 223 groomed acres perched along the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway, with 133 more acres and additional amenities off the main property, Boca Raton Resort and Club continues to draw the world’s most sophisticated travelers — people who can afford any accommodations and wouldn’t stay anywhere else.
Guest room choices range from the original Cloister and the Palm Court Club concierge-level; the contemporary 27-story Tower with ocean views; secluded Golf Villa apartments on the main golf course; and the Boca Beach Club, a sister property where a private half-mile stretch of ocean and beach cabanas complement the amenities package. Dozens of suites enhance a total of 963 rooms.
Room packages for three or seven nights include golf, tennis, health and fitness — maybe even romance.
Guests who like to hit the links will be pleased to know the Resort and Club was rated one of America’s top golf resorts by Golf magazine. Golfers can take advantage of two 18-hole championship courses, created by well-known designer Joe Lee, as well as the Dave Pelz Short Game Golf School.
If you’d rather pick up a racket than a club, revel in the fact that World Tennis magazine ranks the hotel among the top six tennis resorts in the country. New in 1996 are 18 hydro-grid clay tennis courts to expand the existing 34 clay surfaces. Hydro-grids are misted systematically from underground for optimum texture. There’s also expanded parking on the Camino Real lot and a remodeled main entrance. A new tennis clubhouse and fitness center is under construction.
Further expansion plans call for a new 120,000-square-foot conference center, another 18-hole signature golf course, more spa space and a new golf clubhouse.
Seven restaurants in the main hotel and four at the Beach Club comprise seemingly limitless dining selections.
Guest services include laundry and valet, room service, a concierge, a beauty salon and barber shop, valet parking, safe deposit boxes, a reading room and complimentary transportation between hotel properties and to nearby downtown shopping destinations. Mizner’s Dream, a teak vintage motor yacht, ferries passengers between the main hotel and the Beach Club. Retail treats include 11 boutiques and the Curzon Gallery of fine art.
Other amenities include Olympic-size swimming pools, a 23-slip marina, rental boats, watersports, fitness centers, biking, walking and jogging. Call for current rates, special packages and reservations.

Radisson Bridge
Resort of Boca Raton
999 E. Camino Real •
$$-$$$$ • 368-9500
Originally known as The Bridge Hotel, the resort enjoys the same scrumptious views as the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Built in 1980 by the late Richard Dinallo, an affluent retired electrical contractor from New Jersey, the resort underwent a major redo of its 121 rooms in recent years. One early rumor described the unusual number of electrical outlets — said to be an idiosyncrasy reflecting Dinallo’s taste for convenience. Others said he merely anticipated the future of legalized gambling and wanted to be ready to open a casino.
|
|
Well, casinos remains illegal, but almost anything else goes at the Radisson Bridge. It’s great for a honeymoon, weekend getaway, a power lunch, bar or bat mitzvah celebrations and Sunday brunch. All guest rooms have balconies with views of the Intracoastal or the Atlantic, and some corner suites have both. The outdoor circular heated pool and sun deck are nestled close to the Intracoastal Waterway, literally in the shadow of the Inlet Bridge. Amenities include a separate health club and sauna for men and women, complimentary valet or self parking, bicycle rentals and dockside rentals of WaveRunners and boats.
Carmen’s Restaurant and Lounge at the Top of the Bridge has panoramic views of the city and serves one of Boca’s best Sunday brunches. At Watercolors outdoor cafe (see our Restaurants chapter) — currently the only Boca Raton spot to dine on the Intracoastal — guests may enjoy a meal or watch the world drift by as boats head to and from the inlet.
Business travelers especially appreciate the resort’s executive meeting space for corporate seminars or conferences. For worldwide reservations, call (800) 333-3333.

Each unit includes a living room with sleeper sofa, dining area, total kitchen, bath and bedroom — so a one-bedroom unit can accommodate four guests. The exclusive Town of Gulf Stream is named for the ocean phenomenon.

Worth is the name of the town’s namesake lake, and it’s also the word many locals use to describe the trip just to see the bygone-era lobby of this 1921 jewel on the Intracoastal Waterway. Well, it’s worth it. There are 121 guest rooms and 13 apartments. Rates include complimentary continental breakfast, and the hotel is only 10 minutes from the beach. Locals visit just to soak up the Roaring Twenties atmosphere in the lobby. The lovely municipal golf course is two blocks away, and the Gulfstream Hotel has two swimming pools. In season, the dining room is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week; in summer, the lounge doubles as a cafe.
For a half-century, a Finnish family owned the hotel, which hosts an 18-piece Big Band orchestra on Wednesday nights during the season. During the summer, there’s live entertainment on Saturday nights after 9 PM — sometimes rhythm ’n’ blues. Twice a month, Gulfstream Hotel stages a murder-mystery dinner theater. Also new is the Flagler Club, a concierge level with 28 luxury rooms. With 60 new guest rooms, the hotel’s total comes to 572. Big on personalized service to match the head-turning surroundings, The Breakers employs a staff of 1,380.

A heady exercise in the opulence of founder Henry Morrison Flagler, The Breakers oozes Italian Renaissance with hand-painted ceilings, Venetian chandeliers and 15th-century tapestries. Originally the Palm Beach Inn and lost in a fire in 1903, The Breakers also burned in 1925. A year later, the current design appeared as a nod to Villa Medici in Rome.

Or they withdraw to sip tea quietly in their own accommodations, awaiting the next bit of intrigue in the Leopard Room.
An outrageously appointed dining room, lounge and piano den, the Leopard Room also hosts Churchill’s, a new Palm Beach cigar club. The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach
100 S. Ocean Blvd., Manalapan •
$$$$ • 533-6000
The six-story Mediterranean-style resort has its own 7-acre slice of Palm Beach Island, a short ride from Palm Beach International Airport and minutes from Worth Avenue. Even so, co-owner Mel Simon — a nationally known shopping center developer — is spending $2.2 million to refurbish the rooms, which feature private balconies and an ocean view.
Putting on “the Ritz” got its challenge from the legendary Swiss shepherd Cesar Ritz, a 19th-century hospitality pioneer who set the European standard for luxury hotels. King Edward VII is credited with saying Ritz was “the hotelier of kings and the king of hoteliers.”
A private elevator key takes guests to The Ritz Carlton Club, where perks include continental breakfast, afternoon tea and gourmet hors d’oeuvres with cocktails and beverages.
The Ritz has seven tennis courts, an outdoor pool with sun terrace and ocean boardwalk, outdoor cafe, specialty retail shops and a fitness center with spa. Niceties include turndown service, twice-daily maid service and terry robes.
